Atherton
Atherton is an idyllic town regularly ranked as the most expensive ZIP Code in the United States. Mostly residential, few people living outside of Atherton have reason to go in. There are no shops or restaurants. When residents want to get out of Atherton, they take a quick drive to downtown Menlo Park, to enjoy shopping, fine-dining restaurants, parks, and museums.
DID YOU KNOW?
During the 1860’s Atherton was known as Fair Oaks. In 1923 it was decided to rename the town in honor of Faxon Dean Atherton, a former 19th century landowner on the south peninsula.
HOUSING and REAL ESTATE CURRENT MARKET
The town has very restrictive zoning, only permitting one single-family home per acre and no sidewalks. The inhabitants have strongly opposed proposals to permit more housing construction. Mega-mansions line nearly every block. Many homes have fences or landscaping that prevent prying eyes from looking in. Each lot feels like its own gated community.
