The Port of Redwood City is the only deepwater port within the south bay of San Francisco. Furthermore, Redwood Shores is located east of Redwood City, and it is the setting for college rowing races, including competitions among Pacific 10 Conference universities.

Some of the city's events include the Independence Day Parade, held continuously since 1939 and billed as "The largest Independence Day Parade in California”.
